  • Essay / What is Free Speech - 1088

Our founding fathers were willing to pay the price for freedom. Our society must now be prepared to pay the price to benefit from freedom of expression as well as freedom. Defend all speech so that all freedoms are preserved. Be an advocate for absolute freedom of speech to inculcate absolute freedom (Collins 2). In order to uphold the First Amendment, society must demonstrate tolerance and patience (1). Free speech allows others to express their own opinions and does not allow the government to interfere with others receiving such opinions. It is not because the expression of an idea is not the same as that of the majority or that it seems offensive that it is illegal to say it. Opposing viewpoints are essential to the development of society (“First Amendment” 1). They encourage outside thinking and new ideas or revelations. It is freedom of expression that has led to the progress of society and will help continue this process for many years to come.
