  • Essay / Personal Reflection: Personal Summary: The importance...

I had adapted the exercise in a way that suited me. I am privileged in areas such as being financially supported, having the opportunity to pursue education and living in safe environmental conditions; all this, which most people in third world countries do not do. I am more privileged than many people simply because I was lucky enough to grow up and live in an industrialized country. Around the beginning of the year, my family and I went on vacation to the Philippines, where we are originally from. During our stay, we stayed with my grandparents rather than a hotel or resort. This way, I was able to live like an average Filipino for a month. It helped me realize how many privileges we have living in an industrialized country and how many things we take for granted. The environment was polluted and there were piles of trash scattered along the street, so their environmental conditions were not ideal. Many of my cousins cannot afford post-secondary education and must rely on financial support from their parents until they can find employment. I felt guilty after my visit and the “Unpacking Shame and Guilt” section of the reading helped me think about why I felt guilty. I felt guilty because the fact that I am more privileged than them seems to me to be a basic human right. This brought to my attention that we have no control over these privileges that are or are not offered to us.
