Private PrisonsA private prison or for-profit prison, prison or detention center is a place in which individuals are physically confined or confined by a third party under contract with a government. agency. Private prison companies typically have contractual agreements with governments that incarcerate prisoners and then pay a daily or monthly stipend for each prisoner incarcerated in that private facility. Private prisons have been part of the system for several years now, particularly for their participation in the correctional system. The management of private, for-profit prisons began to expand in the 1980s; it represented a qualitative change in the relationship between corrections and private business.
