Oceans generate half of the oxygen people breathe. Air pollution is responsible for 33% of toxic contaminants found in oceans and coastal waters. When factories produce smoke, it ends up being trapped in the ocean, contributing to dead spots. In the ocean, there are many dead spots or dead zones, in which life cannot survive; this is due to lack of oxygen. Even though we can clean up these dead spots, we choose not to. Think about the biggest landfill you've ever seen, filled with all kinds of bottles and trash. The largest landfill is in the oceans, about twice the size of Texas. It is near California, a polluted state. California is a polluted state because of its size. Another factor that plays into California's pollution is easy access to water, as most of California's population lives on the coast. Fish become trapped in the waste so close to shore and die. When I was snorkeling in St. Thomas, the ocean was crystal clear and no trash in sight. this is due to stricter littering laws in place.
