Essay / Plato's Censorship of the Republic - 1090
Censorship in the RepublicPlato's version involves a selective process in which the government selects the work people will have as children and prepares them to be able to do only that work. . Keeping information out of the hands of certain people is Plato's idea of maintaining a just city-state. His belief could cause more harm than good because it creates great divisions in society, creates ignorant people who hold all the power, and leads to problems with everyone in the government. Plato's idea for a perfect government is to have three different classes to have different roles in helping society. The first group of people is the producer class and they are responsible for providing materials and food to the city. This is where farmers, blacksmiths, fishermen, and other similar jobs are found. The second group is that of the Auxiliaries and they are the ones whose mission is to protect the city from threats, therefore the soldiers. The last group are the gatekeepers, they are the philosophers and their job is not only to be knowledgeable but also to be fair. Plato believes that several things can derail the progress of society. “Then nothing crazy and nothing like dissolution can be involved in the law of love…Then sexual pleasure must not be involved” (121). Plato believed that sex should only be reserved for special holidays and the creation of life, but that people should conform to the way a father and son touch each other. Plato not only regulated what two people did in the privacy of their own homes, but he also regulated what people should learn in school. “In any case, it should end where it ended; because training in the musical professions should surely end with a passion for beauty » ...... middle of paper ......k on what would happen if 1000 years passed and tyrannies continued. He then discusses what would happen if other people came to power. So if the people who owned the property would lead to corrupt guardians who wanted the most land and would get helpers to get the land from the producers. It would then be an oligarchy ruled by the rich, then the military would change and the city-state would be divided between the rich and militarily strong and the poor and militarily weak. This would last until democracy was established and would mark the end of the republic. In my opinion, I don't think that would be the worst thing because Plato's republic seems very controlled and uncultured. Maybe they're not installing a full democracy, but a system where people have a say on certain issues and they elect or even appoint officials who will be in charge for a year or two..
