Targets of satire in The Hitchhiker's Ultimate Guide to the GalaxyDouglas Adams satirizes many targets in The Guide ultimate hitchhiker to the Galaxy. Adams came up with the idea for The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in a drunken haze in Germany while lying in a field with the stars rotating above him (Adams, Douglas 12), which explains the style humor and satire of the novel, which doesn't seem to make sense at first, but ends up making sense. Adams almost forgot his idea for the novel (Gaiman 7). The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy satirizes many targets, but particularly government and religion. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy began as an idea that Adams had, believe it or not, hitchhiking across Europe ("Douglas Adams"). A friend lent him a copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to Europe, and Adams came up with the idea of a Hitchhiker's Guide Everywhere. After that, lying in a field in Germany, his mind made the jump to a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Radio broadcasts of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy began in 1978, long before many of the ideas proposed in the novels were realized, or even created, with the exception of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. As such, everything in the series is entirely random and, at least in the eyes of contemporaries, completely improbable (who, in those days, could even begin to imagine actually friendly aliens? Or that they were all almost identical to the human society?), and this improbability constitutes the basis of the entire series. It makes it possible to carry out certain scenarios that were almost impossible, thanks to a device designed by Adams, the Improbability Drive, to transform the improbable into probable.
