    Vignettes/ Case Illustrations As a trainee at Eggleston Family Service, I was responsible for supervising children in foster care and their adjustment to their placement . One of my cases was unique among the others because it involved an adolescent close to emancipation. He was 17 and eager to leave the foster care system. He told me he was moving from placement to placement and wanted to be independent. The problem was that he had no plan after emancipation. He didn't know where to go and had no income. He was determined to never see another social worker in his life. Clients have the right to self-determination in whatever decision they make, but seeing this young man with no idea what to do was alarming. I had to convince him of the importance of informing my client about Assembly Bill 12 and the benefits it would provide for him to attend college. He never dreamed of going to college because he thought it was too difficult. I contacted the county social worker and we sat down with the minor and developed a transition plan to independent living. He agreed to attend community college and live with his uncle. I made the decision to help this minor because he had no positive role models in his life. No one had ever helped him apply to college. I sat down with the client and completed his application for admission to several different colleges. This simple act made him excited to go to college. The client is expected to start school in the fall. One of the cases assigned to me by Eggleston Family Services involved a 12-year-old boy who was having difficulty adjusting to his new placement.
