  • Essay / Pit Bull Essay - 1033

In 2013, an Oklahoma news team reported a story in which a Pit Bull alerted its sleeping owners to a fire that destroyed their home. In the report it states “A 10-year-old pit bull terrier is being hailed as a hero after saving a Lincoln County family from their burning home” (KOCO). In six words, the “Pit Bull” breed is talked about in a positive way. The article goes on to explain how the dog not only saved its owners, but also the other dogs in the family, and how the family considers the dog their hero. Another Pennsylvania dog named Lou was also lucky enough to save his family from their burning house. In January 2015, Chris Julian and Kelly Yarbrough were woken up by their rescue dog Lou as their house was on fire. The family recounted the event to Q13 Fox News and even said: "The fire was coming through the door and the dog saved our lives and without him we would all have died right now." False myths spread by the media as well as negative human influences have led to a horrible misunderstanding about this wonderful breed of dog. The American Pit Bull Terrier is an affectionate, gentle and protective animal that should be given another chance in society. How can a society truly be free of all forms of discrimination if it is always discriminating dogs that are forced to fight? If the government did more to put an end to dog fighting, this stereotype could very well disappear.
