Essay / Examples of Abagail in the Crucible - 1048
This is no longer the case, however, once the word "witchcraft" spreads. This allowed the townspeople to manipulate the situation, opening the door to chaos and causing the breakdown of order, while Abigail is at the center of this damn disorder. The witch hunt begins when Abigail and Betty start calling out the villagers' names: "I saw Sarah good with the devil!" I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw George Jacobs with the devil! ยป(1.48) to free oneself from troubles. Once the witch trials began, all rationality within the court was replaced by the words of the reborn girls who were now fulfilling God's duty of reporting the devil's helpers. This leads to mass hangings in the village, unmaintained farms, and orphaned children. The irony of it all is that in trying to follow the word of God Danforth, the High Judge blindly presents human accusations before God as a reason to kill, thus breaking one of the Ten Commandments that the Puritans follow religiously. Ultimately, all order is lost and cannot be redeemed by the High Court because Danforth "cannot pardon when twelve are already hanged for the same crime" (4.129). Chaos wins the battle against order and thus breaks the power of theocracy.
