    On Columbus Day, students across the country will learn how Christopher Columbus discovered the New World and his fantastic voyages to the New World. Children will learn poems, stories, songs and rhymes about his travels and about himself that day. When introduced to Columbus as a young student, he is portrayed as a respectful gentleman and a hero, when in reality he is a selfish man who takes advantage of inferior people and who schools should teach their students who really was Columbus. presented to students when they are in kindergarten or first grade. Parents could even tell their young children about Columbus' adventures before they could go to elementary school. According to elementary school teachers, Columbus' goal in his travels was to find a shorter and faster way to trade with the Indies. Teachers will also say that he was the first to discover America, that he was a good person, and that he treated Native Americans kindly. Some professors will also say that Columbus undertook this journey to prove that the world was round. If this continues with the information that teachers give to our students, our students will be misinformed and they will then spread their knowledge about Christopher Columbus to other people and they will also be misinformed. ¬¬¬Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in what is now Italy. When he was an adult, he married Filipa Moniz Perestrelo and together they had two boys named Diego and Fernando. He had three brothers and a sister. At a young age he sailed to the Greek island of Chios and later he made voyages to West Africa and he was increasingly interested in a voyage through Atl...... middle of paper ...... discovered the New World were actually Vikings who got lost on their way back to their homeland and were the first Europeans to discover America and the New World. Be sure to tell students how harsh Columbus was and how he took advantage of information from Native Americans and their lands.
