Essay / The impact of Elijah Pierson and Robert Matthews on the...
First, the market revolution was this idea that "being rich" before the 1820s and 1830s, almost everyone was a farmer and did not only produced enough food to sustain itself. and their families. There wasn't this idea of growth for the market. Everything changed with this revolution, there was an increase in trade which further fueled changes in transportation, technology and communications. This all concerns the kingdom of Matthias because this increase in wealth is what helped pay for all of the Prophet's extravagances. Robert Matthews used the money from Elijah and Benjamin to pay for everything needed to build and maintain the kingdom. This found money caused Matthias to dress extravagantly, but despite this style, he remained true to the idea that the best way to live in Truth is to live simply. Simple clothing and a simple lifestyle were the best ways to enlighten oneself in his teachings (Johnson and Wilentz, 98). The market revolution was not just a singular event; other revolutions accompanied it, such as the transport revolution and the communications revolution. The transportation revolution occurred through the construction of new roads, canals, steamboats, and railroads. All this allowed people to move up and down the river, it reduced the cost of transportation by allowing things to be transported further and faster. These changes in transportation connected farmers to markets and made it easier to sell produce. The prophet Matthias is a great example of how not everyone got rich during the market revolution. Robert Matthews, as he was still known, tried his hand at being a businessman and for a time he was very successful. He did not enjoy success for long: with the death of two of his sons and himself seriously ill, his carpentry business failed (Johnson and Wilentz, 60-62). When people, like Matthews, don't get rich and go bankrupt
