Essay / Argumentative Essay on Binge Drinking - 1059
Due to boring college life, many students choose binge drinking as a way to relax and have fun with good friends, but this strategy is something like drinking poison to quench thirst. Drunk driving, fighting and unprotected sex are common consequences of excessive alcohol consumption. “Because of deadly sexually transmitted diseases, easy access to weapons, and roads filled with speeding automobiles, the consequences of alcohol abuse are much more deadly today” (Wechsler et al. 337). It is not an exaggeration, according to Hitt's nephew's description, that two students died and five were seriously injured due to excessive alcohol consumption, during the "Battle of the Binge." These accidents occurred in a college with approximately 1,300 students; compared to the normal mortality rate, 7 out of 1,300 should be high enough to attract society's attention. Wechsler et al. also demonstrate the existence of problems caused by excessive alcohol consumption by conducting a survey, which ultimately shows a strong relationship between the frequency of excessive alcohol consumption and alcohol-related problems. Worse still, as with second-hand cigarettes, students who don't drink alcohol at a college with a high proportion of problem drinkers are more likely to experience alcohol-related problems, and the phenomenon can be defined as excessive consumption of second-hand alcohol.
