  • Essay / Social Workers and Policy Advocacy - 866

As a social worker, it is important to engage in policy practice. It's part of the job, whether you like it or not. This is an aspect that can change the way things are done for customers, in a good or bad way. If you want to be more effective in practice, advocating for policies is one way to ensure your clients receive what they deserve. Chapin (2011) explains that as a social worker, you cannot address all social policy issues, but it is important to consider the policies that affect your clientele. In light of Chapin (2011), my clientele consists of students from an alternative school. , 17-20 years old. The current policy that will affect them the most in their educational journey is the Common Core State Standards. This is a policy that sets educational standards (Florida Department of Education) that will be universal, hopefully across all states. Once each state has adopted the standards, it can then base its curriculum on those standards (Florida Department of Education). This will help bring schools to the same level academically and hopefully increase the graduation rate. As I mentioned, the population affected by this policy is all school-age children. It could also be said that the educator population will also be affected. This policy will benefit students at any school and from any background. Thanks to the existence of standards in all states, if a student transfers to a new school, the standards should be the same. From now on, a student can move and either be well ahead of the new school or well behind. This shouldn't happen; the standard for each level should be the same as you could go to any school and they learn the same things. The coalition members would be the Florida Department of ...... middle of paper ...... things as they are, so there are no concerns. Finally, as with most policies, we must think about financing. Is it possible to implement this policy? It is important to perform a cost-benefit analysis to see if the benefits exceed the costs. Advocate for the Appropriations Committee to adopt this policy to be funded and implemented in schools across the state. Works Cited Chapin, K. Rosemary. (2011).
