    Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder are two of the main illnesses seen in children after being exposed to domestic violence. Among depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, there are several subcategories to help situate the severity of the disorder. Many influences can change the severity of a disorder in children, including: duration of exposure, type of exposure, and time elapsed since exposure. Domestic violence is defined as violence between members of a household, such as that of a married couple or parent of their child. Some cases of domestic violence may be due to simple witnessing, while some of the most impactful events happen directly to the child. Domestic violence can be divided into three smaller categories: physical violence, sexual violence and psychological violence. The most common type of domestic violence is physical violence. This may include hitting, kicking, punching, choking, etc. Physical abuse can be minor in the sense that it leaves only bruises or a bad memory, but physical abuse can also be as serious as broken bones, time spent in the hospital, or as serious as death. Sexual abuse is also a very common type of abuse. Pressuring a child to perform sexual acts, child pornography, and unwanted penetration of a child's genitals are all forms of sexual abuse. Psychological violence is the least common form of violence. Psychological abuse does exactly what its name suggests. This is mental abuse towards someone, such as telling someone they are fat or ugly. Domestic violence can be frightening for young children who witness it.
