    A New Generation: VictorianismThe end of the period of Romanticism gave birth to Victorianism. Victorianism had a major impact on British literature. This type of literature began to develop when Queen Victoria gained her seat in Parliament, between 1837 and 1901. The poem “No, Thank You, John” by Christina Rossetti features many elements considered to be part of Victorianism. In the poem, Rossetti is able to use this conflicted relationship as a way to express how she feels because of how John seems to ignore her thoughts and emotions. Three elements of Victorianism used in "No Thanks, John" are optimism, religious doubt, and social tension. One of the elements found in Rossetti’s “No, Thanks John” was optimism. Optimism can be seen as Rossetti's way of taking this negative situation and trying to turn it into a positive situation in a sense. In the poem, we can see optimism when the poet says that she wants to be “warm friends…friendship is good” (Rossetti, 26). Instead of refusing him completely, she gives him the benefit of the doubt.
