    Since the 1850s, states, schools, and sports teams have used Native American mascots. People cheered for their beloved Indian-named team and applauded them for their ferocity and bravery. No one thought it might be racist. Or that it was disrespectful to the culture and religion of the native people. Native American mascots are a politically incorrect, inhumane and derogatory form of racism that should be a thing of the past. It has almost become a habit. We need to break this habit of accepting racism as the norm and do something about it. We have been blinded for too long and it is time to change our ways. Sports teams and schools should be able to win games and get high marks just as easily without their Indian mascot and name. There are many examples and reasons why Native American mascots should be removed. Children growing up today see these mascots and accept them. We don't talk to them about the racism that underlies them or about the religion of the natives. People are taught to shout war cries and paint blood red stripes...
