Essay / The importance of communicating clearly with others
It is crucial to have the ability to communicate with others without language barriers. If the acquired ability does not exist, one may face challenges throughout one's life. Some challenges may include misinterpretation of an individual and difficulty completing an important task. In the book "Little Bee" by Chris Cleave, one of the many protagonists, Little Bee, is faced with a dilemma: she must learn English from the Queen in order to survive in England as a refugee. She believes that if she learned English from the Queen, people would treat her with more respect and take her seriously than her fellow refugees. I can understand Little Bee's dilemma because I sometimes find it difficult to speak with my grandmother in my native language, which is why I continue to learn it. Although Little Bee and I face similar and different dilemmas, Little Bee learns English from the Queen not only to gain respect, but also to survive in England. I learned English to gain an education for my future. Additionally, Little Bee and I can understand how important it is to have the ability to communicate with others smoothly and effectively. One of the reasons Little Bee wants to learn English from the Queen is so that she can develop greater self-esteem and so that she can survive in England. She needs assurance that mastering English will help her integrate into society. In the book, Little Bee says, “No, it is not the Queen's crown and scepter that rules your land. It’s his grammar and his voice. Therefore it is desirable to speak as she does” (Cleave, 3). This quote shows how Little Bee believes that learning about the Queen of England could bring her security in her life, by having authority and confidence in her voice. She wants... middle of paper ...... doesn't know English very well. As soon as he hears Little Bee's voice, he assumes she is a British civilian. Little Bee and I can understand each other because we both have a desire to speak better in our languages in order to build our self-esteem and gain confidence like the Queen. We both believe that if we could communicate well with others, people would see us from different perspectives, just like how Little Bee changes the taxi drivers' perspective. So, Little Bee and I believe in having a solid foundation for speaking. the required languages because it makes us feel important to others and could also help us feel better about ourselves. Although we have similarities, our major difference is that I learned English to further my education, while Little Bee learned English from Queens to be accepted into British society..
