  • Essay / Preventing suicide among young people - 2140

Suicide among young people is a public health problem. Suicide is the fifth leading cause of death among children aged 15 to 24. Recently, more young people have died from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and other medical problems combined (Miller, Mazza, & Eckert, 2009). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that since the 1950s, the suicide rate among youth has increased by more than 300 percent (Joe & Bryant, 2007). The number of reported youth suicides is actually lower than the actual number of youth suicides. According to the literature, this is due to concern for family, social implications, religious views, and other factors (Page, 1996). Is suicide preventable? Can we reduce the number of suicide attempts? What role should school professionals play in suicide prevention? Although it is believed that if someone has thoughts of committing suicide, it will definitely happen, the results indicate that the more school professionals are aware of suicide, signs and prevention, the more possible it is to prevent suicides. School professionals can and should play a key role in youth suicide prevention by knowing the warning signs and knowing how to intervene to prevent an attempted or completed suicide.
