In today's world, there are modern "witch hunts". Now, I'm not talking about hunting real witches. The definition of a witch hunt is an intensive effort to uncover and expose disloyalty, subversion, dishonesty, or otherwise, usually based on thin, dubious, or irrelevant evidence. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is about the Salem witch trials and how they were unfair and wrong because innocent people were killed and imprisoned. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible to explain and compare the McCarthy Trials and the Salem Witch Trials. In the 1940s and 1950s, the United States hunted down “witches,” actually only members of the Communist Party. This is an example of a modern-day “witch hunt.” In America today, there are many different "witch hunts" going on, from race to religious beliefs to social status to even the choices people make. One race that is discriminated against in America is Hispanics or Mexicans. There are many cases in which a person cannot find a job or lose something simply because they are Hispanic or Mexican. In an article by Gabriel Medina Arenas, Gabriela Calzada, a 46-year-old Hispanic woman, believes she lost a job opportunity simply because she was Hispanic. She said, “I had all the qualifications.” “I think they didn't give it to me because I'm Hispanic but I could be wrong. She only had a bachelor's degree and I have a doctorate. (Qtd in Gabriel Medina Arenas). Many people of a different race than white Americans don't get jobs or other things because of their race. Even if they have higher education or are more qualified for the job, Mexicans are not the only ones who have been or still are discriminated against because of the color of their skin. African Americans or blacks have been middle of paper...... y poverty rate in 2010 was the highest since 1993. Between 1993 and 2000, the poverty rate declined each year, reaching 11 .3 percent. in 2000” (“National Poverty Center | University of Michigan.”). Being poor is common in today's society, many people have lost their jobs or been laid off and need to collect an unemployment check. These people often face discrimination because they are looked down upon by the upper class. All of these examples of modern witch hunts are linked to the Crucible in different ways. No one is literally hunted down like in the Crucible. The court does not go looking for these people. , they are simply looked down upon by American society. These “witch hunts” take place in everyday life, some people do not take the time to look and realize it. Take the time one day to look for these things, you will be sure to see them. modern-day “witch hunts””.
