  • Essay / Effects of Technology and Structural Unemployment

Unfortunately, most secretaries only know how to use a typewriter, so employers will have difficulty filling new positions because secretaries' skills do not match their needs . (What is structural unemployment? (nd)) This would then mean that these secretaries would then have to be retrained to accommodate their future productivity. This would of course increase structural unemployment, but it would also (in the long run) increase employment, thereby increasing the growth and sustainability of the economy. The government simply needs to ensure that it provides education and reskilling of workers in fields that need it, as this would also help prepare the country for future technological developments (if there are to be any).).
