In the classic play Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence plays a major role. Romeo and Juliet trusted him completely because he was the priest of their town. They turned to the brother for help and advice at a few crucial moments in the play. Little did these two lovers know that their decision to turn to Brother Laurence for help would ultimately lead to their deaths. Friar Laurence was responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet because he married Romeo and Juliet, he was afraid of committing a sin and because of his mistaken plan to save Juliet from marriage to Paris. One of the main reasons why Friar Laurence was held responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet was because he married them. First of all, this marriage took place without the consent of the parents. Second, he could have tried to support their relationship instead of marrying them and not telling anyone about it. He explains how these two will become one in marriage; “For by your leaves ye shall not stand alone / Till the holy church shall incorporate two into one” (Shakespeare 47).
