  • Essay / Are we doing enough to prevent suicide among young people?

Many people believe that much has been done to prevent suicide among young people. 2,415 adolescents have committed suicide each year over the past 5 years (Hunter Institute of Mental Health, 2014). Most of them did so because of psychological problems. Additionally, bullying is also one of the causes we should focus on. Additionally, technological advances make it easier for teens to be bullied on the Internet and social media. I think people should worry about youth suicide rather than their physical health, purely because it could be a silent killer for this generation. I don't think people have done enough to prevent youth suicide. Parents want their children to succeed, so they try to push their children to study harder to achieve this goal. To achieve this success, children must obtain good academic results. Children also want their parents to be proud of having them in life, which pushes them to study harder and harder. Sometimes people forget that teenagers' way of thinking is really different from adults. “Their brains have not yet grown,” said Richard Knox (2014), they will have difficulty understanding the true intentions of their parents. They tend to ignore their happiness and their dreams of making their parents happy until the point where they can no longer handle the stress and give up. Most parents are unaware of this phase; they just want to show everyone their children's good academic performance so that they can be considered the best parents. The truth is that stress can lead to suicide in young people. It's hard to tell the difference between a spoiled brat and people who really need help. Sometimes we get frustrated that people who we thought really needed help are just crying... middle of paper... lying about what happened in their lives. They will feel that the world is against them and will feel empty and hopeless. Therefore, in the end, the least thing they can think of is to end their lives. Usually people who want to commit suicide give signs or warning, so we need to be aware of what people do and think. Society also takes a significant toll on youth suicide because most teenagers or young adults still care about what people say about them. Especially parents, they must be aware and caring towards their children. They should not ignore their children's feelings. Even if sometimes they are tired of their children's crying and crying, they still need to listen to them because it is linked to their mental health. Therefore, I think there are many more things that could be done to prevent youth suicide..
