    Employment at will is a law present in all fifty states of the United States; although, in Montana, a reason for termination is required. At-will employment creates dissension among employees when they have been terminated for a cause deemed to have no merit or when no reason has been given. There are pros and cons to this presumption, and employees and employers have different views. At-will employment means that the employer can terminate an employee at any time, for any cause, without warning. However, even an at-will employee cannot be terminated for discriminatory reasons. At-will employment also means that an employee can leave their job at any time without fear of legal consequences. An employer can also change the terms of employment without notice and without penalty. Throughout this article, both aspects of at-will employment will be discussed and different examples of at-will employment cases will be given. At its core, at-will employment is not the best route because it can create feelings of violation and betrayal in the employee and can create negative public opinion or loss of profit for the company. During this session, we discussed the case of a man, John Stone, who was fired for wearing his Packers tie to work even though his boss was a fan of the rival team. In this case, Stone's boss was a Bears fan, which was explicitly known at the dealership and by Stone. One day, when Stone wore his Packer tie to the dealership, he was fired. Stone's boss says he repeatedly told Stone to remove the tie and Stone did not comply. Stone counters by saying he was talking with customers during these orders and his boss told him to continue his work.
