Essay / What is Sovereignty - 1220
Sovereignty(1) Sovereignty means “the power or authority supreme and independent of government, as possessed or claimed by a state or community”. (Dictonary.com) First of all, sovereignty is vital for the survival of any country. Singapore's sovereignty is based on a cohesive society, economic development and our military vitality. Furthermore, Singapore has always given priority to its security and its security policy is based on the "two pillars of deterrence and diplomacy", a rational affair advocated by its leaders. (Eugene Lim, 2013, para. 3). Second, it is a small country which makes it more difficult to protect its sovereignty because other countries can easily take over in the event of war, making terrorist threats high. Additionally, the lack of natural resources needed for Singapore's economic growth makes it difficult to survive. Therefore, Singapore has to rely on other countries to obtain its resources such as water, timber, food, etc. Additionally, maintaining good relations will give Singapore an advantage, because in times of crisis, other countries can help Singapore. On the other hand, the government protects and fights for the rights of the people. So, if an undisciplined government that does not care about its citizens can affect the sovereignty of the country, problems will start to arise, such as war, due to disagreements between the government and the people. Additionally, few Singaporeans are interested in joining the military, making it difficult. as Singapore's defense will weaken due to lack of manpower. About a third of the men in the army are former soldiers. Due to economic growth and being one of the safest countries, Singapore's sovereignty will be threatened as many people will want to rule the country.Al...... middle of paper ......., nd Web.
