Essay / Ethical Decision Making of a Nurse - 2902
Nurses face many ethical dilemmas every day and if these ethical situations are not handled professionally and ethically, they can have serious consequences for both the nurse and the nurse. nurse than for the patient. When nurses face these ethical dilemmas, they have a decision to make. So, what does the nurse do when decision-making involves ethical dilemmas? So, said one nursing student, I chose to put myself in the role of a health care provider such as a nurse. It was my first day of clinical rotation and the client I was assigned to needed to take a bath. I was not comfortable bathing the patient alone, so I asked one of my colleagues for help. The client was a shy, soft-spoken man. As I was undressing the client, I heard a patient and her family arguing. She wants to refuse life support and the family says they want everything done. She is a competent person who suffers from breast cancer and has undergone numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and yet the cancer continues to spread. She experiences side effects from the treatment, such as vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness and fatigue. The nurse who was in the room with the client and her family, just said that he would give them some time to discuss the situation and then come back later to see what they had agreed on. The situation in question presents a dilemma in terms of nursing practice. According to Kozier et al (2010), morality “relates to good and evil” (p. 300). From a moral perspective of this situation, the nurse was wrong to allow the client and her family to argue without providing the information necessary to put the client and her family at ease. In this case, the nurse does not take...... middle of paper ...... care. Preventing unfair practices in healthcare settings is not easy because each individual reacts differently to each situation. All we can do is continually teach nurses that the patient comes first and that our job is to uphold the client's right to autonomy, respect, privacy, confidentiality, dignity and access to appropriate information. Practice in accordance with the Nursing Act and its regulations, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Code of Ethics, principles, statements, guidelines or documents. Most of the time, the nurse also responds and reports to the appropriate person when situations arise that may harm clients or health care providers, including incompetence, misconduct, and incapacity. In conclusion, you must act as a role model for nursing students, your colleagues and others, by demonstrating ethics..
