  • Essay / Character Comparison and Contrast: Best and Hariot

In A True Discourse by George Best and A Brief and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia by Thomas Hariot, the two men share a common goal, which was to bring people to America. George Best used a character who represents someone logical or a thoughtful man; but does not stray far from its religious origins and the beliefs of the time. Thomas Hariot presented an authoritative character, someone who knows the customs, people, and amenities of the colony. Even though both men chose a different character, they knew how to use what would best suit their purpose and audience. Each character was chosen for their effectiveness and each appeared differently in these works. However, they both wanted the same thing, namely to fund further exploration and/or colonization. In the extract from George Best's work, he addresses a subject that was very topical at the time, namely the indigenous people of the Americas. . By first addressing commonly held theories, and then directly showing why they may not be true, he is able to begin to explain his theories to a newly educated mind; he does this in the hopes of replacing the incorrect information with what he considers to be the correct information. While attempting to educate his readers, Best remains true to his British roots; he makes sure to use the pronouns we and we inclusively. For example, at the beginning of A True Discourse he states: "We have among us in England black Moors, Ethiopians, from all parts of Torrida Zona, who, after a little time, can well bear the cold of our country. And why shouldn’t we, too, endure the heat of their country” (Best 54)? This gives him the advantage that the audience identifies with him as one of their own, not an outsider trying to change their beliefs. ...... middle of paper ...... h. Best and Hariot take very different approaches to reaching their target audience; Best is identified as the well-traveled and informed British man and Hariot as the "Americanized" expert with British roots and loyalty. Both knew where these distinctions should lie and managed to represent them with great success. They looked at all the topics and how they should position themselves in relation to them. Best included himself in every topic, without distinguishing between “me” and “you.” Hariot went from distant expert to staunch Brit from one paragraph to the next. He knew he couldn't risk drawing a line between the two sides that would leave him on one side or the other. He had to expertly cross the boundary between the new world and the old. This work shows the difference between the one who reports the information from exploration and the one who makes the discoveries part of him..
