Essay / A Biblical Response to Society - 1356
Sociology is an extremely valuable tool for understanding how society and individuals interact, function, develop and change. The study of sociology seeks to make sense of what happens in front of and behind the scenes in a society. For purposes of clarification, society is defined as a “territory-based, comprehensive social grouping that includes all social institutions necessary to meet basic human needs” (Popenoe, 86). We live in a secular world and a society steeped in sin. As Christians, we must have an appropriate biblical response to society and the world around us. The three aspects of society that will be discussed in this article are culture, social norms and mores, and social ills and injustices. First, culture is simply “the shared products of a human group or society” (Popenoe, 53). The two products of culture are intangible culture and material culture. Intangible culture is essentially made up of intangible elements such as good and evil, values and knowledge. Material culture consists of material objects that tend to represent intangible culture. Material culture ranges from monuments to fashions and technology, even to the mundane. All material culture represents an immaterial culture. A culture can easily be measured by its intangible values. America was originally founded on solid values that are now all but abandoned. Self-discipline and hard work have been replaced by instant gratification and laziness. Additionally, American material culture manifests itself through the products sought after in our materialistic society. The iPod, sports, cars, boats and other luxury items are considered material icons of America. It is becoming increasingly difficult to live a Christian witness given the negative cultural change in our society. G...... middle of paper ...... correctly. Overall, the highest priority a Christian should have in society is to bring glory to God and be the salt and light of the earth. Christ asked us to be different and gave us the great commission before leaving for heaven (Matthew, 5). Paul urged the Corinthians to give glory to God in whatever they do (I Corinthians 10:31). It is for this purpose that humans were created. God is the only one who can bring about revival and reformation, but we must always follow the Bible. Every situation is different, but the Bible never changes. The Reformation was a great spiritual shift toward God that resulted in major positive social change. The man did what God commanded him, and God gave grace and blessing. The “five solas” were the extrapolated biblical principles followed by Christian reformers. Although God's grace, Christians and society have prospered.
