Essay / Gun Control and Gun Violence - 1569
Fewer Laws, More GunsIs it scary to think of family members or close friends dying innocently because they were victims of a shooting. The recent shooting at a 7-Eleven store across the street from Cerritos College has many people talking about gun violence. In the United States, one of the biggest problems is gun violence. Over the years, gun violence in the United States has increased. Most of the time, shootings take place in schools, stores and public places, where many innocent people are injured or die. When a shooting occurs, the reporter, on social media or on the front page of a newspaper, talks about gun issues. There are two sides to this gun debate: one wants more laws and the other wants more guns. Individuals need to consider which side of the debate offers the greatest gain at the least cost. If we look at the laws, it will not be possible to develop more because individuals will break the rules. Many won't stop until they own a gun, legally or illegally. Although some people do not support the right to own a gun, gun ownership will determine an individual's life or death by ensuring their safety. Having the right to own guns could help save more lives because a gun would be a very good source of protection. When it comes to the gun debate in the United States, individuals should prioritize personal freedom because by owning more guns, people could feel safer and protected. In the United States, for people to legally carry firearms, individuals must go through background checks, but background checks fail because some individuals bring firearms into the state illegally. In Nicholas Kristof's article "Some Inconvenient Gun Facts for Liberals," he suggests that since the middle of the article, the gun debate in America leads many people to talk about how dangerous guns are. Trying to stop people from buying guns or disposing of guns would do no good because the guns could be imported illegally. Background checks would only work if the government made the law stricter, but since it's not strict yet, things will stay the same. Instead of legislating more, the government should allow people to carry guns with them, as these could be used for protection. There could have been a possibility that in the San Bernardino shootings, the 14 people who died in the attack could have survived if they had a gun. Who knows where and when a shooting might take place? No one knows except the one who will commit the crime. This is why having more weapons could reduce the risk of injury or death in a shooting. Which means more guns will equal more security.
