Essay / Communism: How It Tried to Help Women - 2209
The constitutional patriarchy instilled by the Central European government greatly affected women in the period after World War I. Communism attempted to give more rights to women and promote their equality among men. but this was not often the case. As a regime, patriarchy favored male roles in many aspects of society. Loves of a Blonde, Man is Not a Bird, Daisies and A Woman Alone show the effect of patriarchy on women and how women might succeed or fail in trying to oppose it. The women in the films showed how society pressured women to accept relationships and roles in the family, which were repressive. However, not all women gave in to the pressure and attempted to change their lives by adopting different attitudes and actions in the face of the situation. By watching these films, the viewer can get a perspective on how patriarchal society has affected women and how women have acted based on their position. Patriarchal societies have had common effects in Central European countries. Women were often treated like citizens in a third world country (Katarzyna 4). In the Czech Republic, women were considered equal to men under communist rule. Despite this, women still held inferior jobs to men, with men occupying political and government jobs and women expected to remain in one sphere within the household. Women were considered equal to men, but they were socially looked down upon if they were not married or if they were not housewives (Heitlinger 90). Like the Czech Republic, Yugoslav women enjoyed legal equality but were unable to exercise their rights as citizens, primarily political, outside of the workplace. Women worked in fields such as education, medicine, banking or postal... middle of paper ... freedom in dating other men without fear of repercussions. The Daisies filmmaker did his best to show the change with his film which shows Jarmila and Jezinka rebelling against the society that trapped them. The film was a success and shows how women can participate in important work and advance in careers unheard of at the time, such as expressing themselves creatively. Ultimately, the films show how women lived in unsatisfactory and contradictory conditions by declaring themselves equal while women were considered inferior to men. Women who acted out against society by ending a relationship or rebelling against the way society wanted them to act show the lesson that women should not be subjected to abuse or inferiority in relationships or in any other aspect of life suggested by patriarchal societies..
