Essay / Tensions of the Changing 1920s - 981
History is an abundance of movements that demonstrate changes in societal ideals and beliefs, it also conveys the struggle that many people had to maintain conservative ideas. The 1920s were an important period in which many changes occurred and began. It is the embodiment of the struggle between an evolving nation and conservatives who want everything to stay the same. The power struggle between conservatives and rebellious members of society had been going on for years, but it was the passage of the Volstead Act, which had sparked Prohibition, that created explosive change throughout society. Drinking became fashionable, everyone wanted to do it because it was forbidden. With the violation of a law, people began to break societal norms; women were drinking and smoking in public, black people were becoming popular in society, and even accepted religious facts were being questioned. This disregard for norms caused an uproar throughout society and was the main tension between the old and new ideals; the tension came from ideals regarding women, black people, and religion. In the early 1920s, the woman began to change both in her actions and in her appearance; they had short hair, wore dresses showing their ankles, began smoking and drinking in public. There was an outcry, particularly from the conservative woman. Until this time, women were portrayed as perfect housewives who only took care of the house, their children and their husbands. But the times changed and with it so did the style, the 1920s brought a new desired fashion, the flapper. The Flappers were depicted as rebellious young people who had short hair, flashy clothes, bold makeup, and listened to jazz. Even though many women in the 1920s were not flappers, the fashion spread, hence the 'scandal...... middle of paper...... But the damage was already done , the trial wasn't really about whether Scopes was guilty, but ultimately the role of religion in society, especially in schools, and Bryan's mistake at trial left the debate wide open. open. This question is still relevant today, no one knows if it is the right answer and it still causes tension between conservatives and liberals in society. The 1920s were a decade of glamour, change and trouble. This created the blockages necessary to launch many social reforms, but it was a tense time. So many changes happened at once, irritating all conservatives and not fast enough for some liberals. Like any good battle, this one has lasted through the ages and continues today, with different subjects. While some arguments have not changed, new ones have been added to our list of conflicts..
