Essay / Analysis of Zhang Huan's Seeds of Hamburg - 718
Zhang Huan's performance piece, Seeds of Hamburg, was performed in 2002 in Hamburg, Germany. In the performance, Huan entered the wooden and wire cage after being covered in honey and birdseed. Inside the cage, Huan moved in various movements and 28 birds were released into the cage. Next, Huan sits on this throne-like structure constructed from crates. After sitting on the throne structure for a while and allowing birds to nibble on the seeds on his body, one bird finally pulled a red ribbon from his mouth. The performance ended with Huan releasing the bird. This symbolic performance represents hope and the fearlessness of challenging authority. First, the geometric shape of the cage contrasts with the larger shape. By allowing the birds to nibble on his body, Huan illustrated his desire to "reveal" himself again ---- to become human again. The honey and birdseed mask hides his identity, and it could also be a symbol of sins and lies that people accumulate over time. The birds are his way of relieving himself and becoming free. When Huan sat on the throne structure, he became the authority of the small “universe” in which he found himself. Huan didn't stop her performance until a bird tugged at the red ribbon in her mouth. This is the most important part of the performance piece. The red ribbon, which stands out against the neutral colored background, represents the lineage of hope and love. Thanks to the courage and actions of this bird, he gained freedom. Huan says that sometimes citizens of a society live in fear of acting against their authority. It is necessary, even sometimes crucial, to speak out frankly, even if it perhaps relates to a time when most of Germany was blinded by the words of Adolf Hitler during World War II. Hitler fed the Germans lies that caused some to become totally blinded and lose their humanity. History shows us that there are serious consequences when people remain silent and submissive. Another aspect is the background music. The music, which blends classical Asian and Western traditions, symbolizes the unison of the two hemispheres of the world. Everyone, regardless of their cultures and ethnicities, is guilty of being herded and
