Essay / Indigenous Issues In The Truth About Stories
by Thomas King, he tells the story of Edward Sheriff Curtis, a photographer who traveled across the United States in 1900 taking photos of various indigenous peoples (King, 2003 , p.32). The problem with Curtis is that he "sought out the literary Indian, the dying Indian, the imaginative construction," so much so that he "carried boxes of 'Indian' accessories" to dress people who didn't fit in this image (King, 2003, p.32). King compares this “literary Indian” to “de facto Indians,” which are the real Native Americans who do not fit people's expectations at all most of the time (King, 2003, p. 32). So the problem is not who people are, but what other people think they should based on their own opinions.
