  • Essay / Conflict resolution - 1849

“It is better to live any way than not at all” (Chekhov 1), the short story The Gamble began with the conflict when the person had no other choice but to choose between the death penalty or life imprisonment. The Wager was originally written by Anton Chekhov, a profound Russian short story writer who focused a lot on human values and the reflection of the extravagant and selfish Russian nobility. And through The Bet he was able to express all these ideas from both sides, the banker and the lawyer with the conflict throughout the story. The author introduced the story with a momentary flashback in which the banker remembered at night what happened in the past. to go straight to the party fifteen years ago. Well, this flashback style for the opening suggests that the party event fifteen years ago was unforgettable. In addition, this style of introduction helps attract the audience's attention and curiosity more effectively. That night, the banker and the lawyer made a bet based on the idea between life imprisonment and the death penalty. The argument began with the banker's firm statement: "Capital punishment kills a man at once, but life imprisonment kills him slowly." Which executioner is more humane, the one who kills you in a few minutes or the one who takes your life over several years? (Chekhov, 1) and the lawyer had chosen life imprisonment, indicating that “It is better to live any way than not at all” (Chekhov, 1). To prove his philosophy, the lawyer agreed to stay fifteen years in the basement of the banker's house, without the surface world being informed. In exchange for these years of imprisonment, the banker would give the lawyer two million dollars if the lawyer succeeded with... middle of paper... uh and the banker had faced a lot of crises when he has decided to make the bet, endure the consequences from both sides for making the bet and make the final resolution or solution. Life is an inestimable freedom, being able to live is better than accepting death. However, life is too short and unexpected; you would die tomorrow or the next second. Therefore, The Bet means that not everyone should have to fight for nice things like money and power, because it is learning that gives value to man, not money (knowledge is power and money is imprisonment). Everyone lives fully and appreciates every moment, event, thing and person that appears in their life. Even this moment is painful, but every suffering has a meaning in this world that helps us grow and develop our unique identity, overcome obstacles and cherish ourselves with others..
