Have you ever seen a movie or play and thought, “Man, this is so cool. I wonder what's the story behind all these actors and plays? The history of theater and theater has evolved a lot since its creation and has a long and deep past. The history of theater and theater has many components, including Greek/Roman theater, Middle Ages theater, European/Renaissance theater, Elizabethan theater, and modern theater. The history of theater began in ancient Greece and Rome, where its deepest roots come from. In 700 BC, the first dithyrambs, which are songs that tell a story and honor the gods, were composted in Athens, Greece. (“Story”) The dithyramb, composed of men and young boys, told a story through various narrations while singing and dancing. (“History”) In 600 BC, the Feast of Dionysius was founded in Athens and plays were performed there to honor the gods. ("History") Once the plays were completed, prizes and gifts were awarded to the best play performed by the actors, who were only narrators at that time ("History") In 530 BC, the first actor was added to the choir assembly. It is also the first time that an actor takes the stage as a character and not as a narrator. ("History") A second one was added by Aeschylus, the great tragedian, and won many awards in 474 BC ("History") In 468 BC, Sophocles added a third actor to the theater and wrote many influential plays, one being -Oedipus the King. (“Story”) The actors also had a different name, which was the word “hypocrites”. (“History2”) Originally, in the 5th century BC, there was no selection process for choosing actors.
