Essay / The Black Knight: utilitarianism or ethics?
Ethics, from Immanuel Kant's point of view, is above all a question of duty and not of moral inclination. For example, the first proposition of morality is an action that must be performed out of duty to have moral value (298). In other words, if one felt generous and wanted to give money to those who really need it, this would technically not be morally worthy according to Kant. The reason is that this person did not do it out of duty but rather out of free will. For an action to have moral value, it could be an example of a person going to work every day. Everyone has their own specific job to do at work and it is their duty. Overall, Kant believes that ethics must come from an act of duty for it to be morally worthy and that it is not consequences that determine what is right or wrong. Now, keeping these two normative ethical theories in mind, what will be presented in this article is how this is reflected in the film The Dark Knight. So, before watching this film, it was decided that a thesis statement needed to be created. The thesis will be that the Dark Knight also known as Batman is a utilitarian hero. Having not seen this film before, he does not know to which category of ethical theory The Dark Knight will belong. Therefore, it will be a surprise in any case what kind of results will be obtained.
