Plastic bags are used by the billions around the world. Around 380 billion plastic bags are used each year in the United States alone. In the city of Brownsville, the plastic ban ordinance took effect on January 5, 2011. According to former mayor Pat Ahumada, the ban eliminated 350,000 bags per day. The problem of waste resulting from the use of plastic bags is becoming increasingly difficult and has costly negative consequences. Therefore, with the information and research obtained, it is acceptable to say that banning bags is overall a good idea. Banning plastic bags will help the environment immensely. According to statistics, it takes about 12 million barrels of oil to make as many bags as we use. Thousands of marine animals and more than a million birds die every year because of plastic bag pollution. It is said that even when plastic bags photodegrade in a landfill, the plastic never disappears and toxic particles can enter the food chain when unsuspecting animals ingest them.
