Whether it is an object in the room or an action she is performing, each symbol has a deep and complex meaning that helps to describe Mattie's true character. Every subtle detail of Mattie's character relates to her, like the light that shines in her room. His natural mood of light and brightness is vividly depicted when Ethan tries to sleep. “As he lay there he could hear Mattie moving about in her room, and her candle, sending its little ray across the landing, drew a barely perceptible line of light under her door. He kept his eyes fixed on the light until it disappeared. Then the room went pitch black and no sound was audible except Zeena's asthmatic breathing” (50). When Ethan is surrounded by darkness, Mattie provides him with the light he needs as a symbol of hope.
