Essay / College Pressures By William Zinsser Analysis - 935
In 1979, “…it is not unusual for a student, even if he works part time at the university and full time during the summer, to 'accrue $5,000 in loans after four years...loans that he must begin repaying within a year of graduation' (13). This is something the student will keep in mind while studying. They will never know exactly what they will have to do to pay it all back. But this is something that is closely linked to parental pressure. “Parents have good intentions; they try to guide their sons and their authors towards a secure future. But sons and daughters want to specialize in history, classics or philosophy – subjects with no “practical” value” (20). This puts a strain on students and makes it harder for them to truly enjoy going to class every day. After that, there are two different types of pressure that the students themselves cause. The first type of stress is peer pressure. “I had a freshman, who I'll call Linda, who came over and told me she was under terrible pressure because her roommate, Barbara, was much brighter and studied all the time. I couldn't tell him that Barbara had come two hours earlier to say the same thing about Linda” (24). This competitiveness that students feel to excel is caused by peer pressure. This will cause tons of unnecessary stress that will impact everyone.
