Children have been used for many dangerous and inappropriate things throughout history, but child labor laws have pushed this to the limit. extreme. Child labor is the use of children in an industry or business, usually in an illegal or inhumane manner. It started around the same time as the Industrial Revolution. In 1810 in the United States, approximately 2,000,000 children worked between 50 and 70 hours per week and earned as little as one dollar. The children who worked in these factories could be between 4 and 5 years old. Child labor laws came into effect in the 1900s. Children were chosen more often than adults because they were easier to manage, cheaper, and less likely to strike. The machines the children would use did not require the strength of an adult, so their size allowed them to adapt and move in smaller places, unlike an adult. One of the reasons child labor became so popular was that many families were poor and needed money.
