Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald is one of the most famous American authors of the early 20th century. Fitzgerald was born September 24, 1896 in Minnesota. Fitzgerald is a descendant of the famous patriot Frances Scott Key, known for writing the “Star-Spangled Banner.” Fitzgerald's life seemed to have ups and downs depending on his lifestyle and the events that happened to him and those around him. Although Fitzgerald is most famous today for The Great Gatsby, he was a man of many talents thanks to his writing skills. Fitzgerald's childhood involved him moving to upstate New York after the failure of his father, Edward, as a wicker furniture maker in St. Paul. Edward then became a salesman for Procter & Gamble where, in 1908, he was laid off and the family returned to St. Paul when his son was twelve years old. When the family returned to St. Paul, they lived comfortably off the inheritance from their mother, Mary (Mollie). Mary's inheritance came from her father, an Irish immigrant who became wealthy as a wholesale grocer. Both Edward and Mary were Catholics....
