Essay / Book Review - 1487
When attempting to raise awareness about a socio-economic issue, authors typically take one of two approaches. They can either present their research on the topic or choose to provide anecdotal evidence on the issue. So, the first aspect to consider about Nickle and Dimed is that Ehrenreich decided to move up the ladder and delve into the world of minimum wage. Ehrenreich believes that middle- and upper-class America is blind to this struggle and therefore decides to draw attention to the problem by becoming the subject of the experiment themselves. This is set out in more detail in the introduction, as Ehrenreich claims: “the idea which led to this book arose in relatively lavish circumstances” (p. 1). This sentence constitutes the author's admission that the book is full of juxtapositions and ironic situations created by an upper-middle-class journalist attempting to recreate the life of a poor minimum-wage earner. Naturally, this will lead to both positive and negative consequences that will affect how the book is perceived. Thus, from a critical point of view, it will be useful to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the book based on these consequences. To first analyze Ehrenreich's performance, it is appropriate to describe his experience and how it was conducted. The book can be simplified to an experiment because she sees herself as a scientist who had a duty to delve into the “chaos” of society (p.3). She decided to hide her true skills, take the best-paying job, and pay the cheapest rent. She also decided that she would always have a car and never go hungry. Eventually, she promised herself that if any of those limits came close, she would cheat. For this experiment, Ehrenreich took a low-wage job ... middle of paper ... further emphasizing that the fact that the American public still believes in the idea that a job equals success is absurd and naive. However, this review considers that this "weakness" was caused by the nature of the piece, with Ehrenreich deciding to create his own experiment rather than showing research on the subject. Overall, this book deserves all the praise it has received because it fulfills its main objective and more. The weaknesses are overshadowed by the story's ability to engage the reader and show not only the economic hardships faced by individuals in minimum wage jobs, but also the psychological and physical consequences associated with this lifestyle. Therefore, Nickel and Dimed can be seen as an eye-opening experience for individuals who have not considered the downsides of capitalism that the mainstream media seems to forget..
