She couldn't handle it. The stress began to take its toll not only mentally but physically. “She was sick for a long time. When we saw her again, her hair was cut short, which made her look like a girl with a vague resemblance to those angels in the colorful stained glass windows of churches, a little tragic and serene (Faulkner). This solitude changed her. “The next time we saw Miss Emily, she had gained weight and her hair was turning gray (Faulkner).” She began to change even more as time passed and the loneliness grew stronger. We can only imagine how she felt. Losing a father, then losing the only man she ever loved. She clung to Homer even after he left. She held on to love even though it was gone. The townspeople took pity on her when they found Homer's body locked in the room and when they saw the hair resting on the imprint of a head on the pillow next to him. She found in a man the love and compassion that she never found in her father. Everyone felt sorry for Emily, but she never knew the feeling of being truly loved. Her father showed deep cruelty towards her, without compassion or fatherly love. His mother was never mentioned, so we assume she wasn't there. We never heard of a brother or sister, so no love for a brother or sister. She never had a friend, a husband or children. She has never experienced any of the things a woman aspires to in life.
