  • Essay / Ethical Issues in Gambling - 881

There are times when gambling can be harmful to yourself and this harm can spread to your friends and family. Gambling can cause problems by inflicting mental and financial harm on a person with a constant need to gamble. There is another way that gambling can have negative effects on a person, including the physical harm that gambling can cause. Gambling is often associated with alcohol consumption, especially binge drinking. Gambling is also associated with smoking. Smoking cigarettes has been proven over time to cause many cancers and other diseases. However, gambling can be just as mentally and financially destructive as it is physically harmful. Gambling can be like any other vice like drugs and alcohol. This can be so addictive that counseling is needed to address it. Finally, wherever there is gambling, there will usually be white collar crime and violent crime. The movie “Casino” was based on real events and characters showing how the mob and other crooked officials exploited gambling for their profit (Newbart, 2008). The casinos in this film were also surrounded by criminal behavior. These are just a few examples of how gambling can harm a person's life, family, and friends. This does not exclude harmful side effects for society as a whole. Gambling should not be a celebrated action, but should be treated like a cancer and heavily regulated. The first problem related to the game is constructed through the ethical theory of utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is the theory “that there is an obvious solution that is right, and that can also appeal to common sense” (Mosser, 2013). This theory applies the rule of what is best for ...... middle of paper ...... me in the area where they are located. Some would say casinos will create jobs and improve the local economy. But in this specific case, the theory of utilitarianism proves the opposite. Gambling venues like casinos only benefit a small fraction of people. The consequences of the exploitation and promotion of games of chance and their establishments are directly and indirectly harmful to our society. This causes people to become addicted to gambling and become destructive to themselves and everyone around them. It also leads to other addictions like alcoholism. It indirectly affects people by fostering an environment conducive to crime. Increasing restrictions on gambling and limiting the number of gambling venues will benefit our society. This is why gambling should not be celebrated, but treated as if it were a cancer. Works cited The ethical problems of gaming
