Essay / Pop Style: Live Concert Performance Analysis - 971
The live concert I attended was the Dana Presents Concert Series: Recital by Faculty and Guest Artists at the College of Creative Arts and of communication. The venue was BlissRecital Hall. The recital included faculty artists Dr. James Umble on saxophone and Dr. Glenn Schaft on vibraphone. Guest artists from the Cleveland Orchestra included Art Klima on viola, Stephen Warner on violin, Carolyn Warner on piano, and Richard Weiner on percussion. Late modern and romantic style music was the theme of the live performance. The style of music was evident due to the unconventional harmony and tonality of the music associated with modern period music. Late Romantic style music was evident due to the natural and mysterious sounding pieces that identify with this musical period. The highlight of the show was the world premiere of Vache Sharafyan's soprano “Verses,” recreated for saxophone and performed by Dr. James Umble on soprano saxophone and Dr. Glenn Schaft on vibraphone. The performance of “Verses” was a wonderful live experience in which the timbre of the instruments and the actions of the performers were fascinating. The first section of the program presented Hindemith's Trio, for alto, heckelphone or tenor saxophone and piano, op. 47. This is a dramatic, modern piece in two movements that was performed with elegance and passion. The next work performed was Sharafyan's “Verses” for soprano saxophone and vibraphone. The intimate feeling of the two-instrument performance was indicative of chamber music. Both artists' ability to perform the piece was stimulating and thought-provoking. The final piece before intermission was Stream of Life for soprano saxophon by Sato...... middle of paper ...... ence and ability to incorporate itself into the piece at hand. His performance as a pianist really struck me as a listener. The concert space, while very pleasant, was extremely hot on the day of this recital, making the experience somewhat uncomfortable. Overall, the intimate lighting and dynamics of the recital hall made the show a good experience. Works Cited “Preludes”. The Oxford Companion to Music. Oxford Music Online.
