Literature Review: Open Visits in the ICU Studies have shown that open visits in the ICU are an asset rather than a hindrance when it comes to well-being of a patient. Since the 1950s, visiting has evolved from a strict regimen controlled by nurses to a more flexible, patient-centered approach (Taylor, 2008, p. 30). Inclusion of family in patient care is evolving toward a collaborative model between the patient, family, and health care providers. In response to this patient and family centered care (PFCC) collaboration, this method has been encouraged to achieve the most beneficial outcomes for patients and their families. Open ICU visits should be encouraged, not because of the pressure of increasing social awareness, but because they can provide comprehensive responses to the needs of patients and their families. Many studies are underway on this topic and garnering great support, prompting the implementation of the PFCC, which encourages open visits in intensive care. The following is a brief summary of research studies regarding the current state of knowledge related to the promotion and benefits of open visiting in intensive care. visit to the ICU.Literature SourcesThe main goal of conducting a literature review is to obtain the most usable and reliable studies relating to the topic of interest. High reliability and quality of evidence-based studies are provided by filtered sources. For my review, I was able to find systematic reviews and individual articles. All of these reviews focus on the dilemma between open and restricted visits in intensive care units. With multiple points of view from different perspectives, I was able to use the comparison and testing approaches.
