The powerful Hammurabi, widely known for constructing the first set of written laws, was the sixth king of the Amonte dynasty of ancient Babylon (Hammurabi). The name Hammurabi means "the parent is a healer", which comes from the Amorite language (Hammurabi). He was born in 1805 BC and died around 1750 BC. His power was inherited at a very young age from his father, Sin-Muballit (Hammurabi). Hammurabi was 13 years old when he came to the throne. He reigned for 42 years, from 1792 BC to 1750 BC (Hammurabi). A few years into Hammurabi's reign over Babylon, he decided to write the first set of written laws in order to make the ancient people aware of the consequences of their illegal actions (Hammurabi). ). This promulgation of a new code of Babylonian law was inscribed on a stela, which is a large stone monument located in the center of the city. It consists of 282 laws (Hammurabi). The repercussions of the laws varied according to one's social status, but they remained very harsh by modern standards. Hammurabi's Code has an overall simple concept. This concept is similar to the well-known expression "an eye for an eye" (philosophy of the law of retaliation, coined by Lex Talionis). If someone has stolen something, the thief's hand must be cut off or he will be punished in a manner consistent with the action (Hammurabi). But if a person belonging to a lower social class harmed a person belonging to a higher class, he would be put to death. However, if a person from a higher social class harmed someone from a lower class, they would most likely be fined (Hammurabi). The Code of Hammurabi was written primarily in the precursor script to hieroglyphs, known as cuneiform.
