Miracles Really HappenThe ability of scientists to give humans and animals longer, healthier lives is not a cruel and inhumane crime; it's a miracle. Animal research is the key to preventing pain and suffering. Vaccines prevent children from becoming paralyzed and disfigured by infectious diseases while suffering in the shadow of death. Speaking of the diphtheria vaccine, the Research Defense Society states: "...Before the diphtheria vaccination was developed...as many as one in ten people, mostly children, caught it and many died of choking , paralysis or heart failure. ยป Before the creation of vaccines, farmers lived in fear of diseases infecting and killing entire herds of livestock. Animal research now prevents the unnecessary loss of precious human and animal lives. The research benefits both humans and animals because both beings are similar when it comes to their body components. Many of the treatments given to humans are the same as those given to animals. According to the Research Defense Society, "the human polio vaccine has been used to protect chimpanzees in the wild." Both species can now undergo surgery without pain caused by injury or illness. Transplants, tumor removal, blood transfusions and joint replacements allow animals and humans to live vigorously. By using new breeding methods, endangered species find new hope. Without animal research, there would be no life-support machines to keep premature babies alive....
