Essay / The Truth in Postmodern Culture - 1306
The Truth in a Postmodern CultureOver the past thirty years, generations have come to understand that the world around us is made up of worldviews and thought patterns that inform culture . Postmodernism informs more about current culture than the past and plays a major role in media, politics, and religion. Postmodernism relies more on experience than on specific principles, knowing that the outcome of experience will be relative rather than universal. Postmodernism involves the breakdown of innocent confidence in the self's ability to control its own destiny. What are some characteristics that researchers find important?1. Are all religions the same?2. How much can be tolerated in a culture?3. Can the truth be absolute? Are all religions the same? In this book, Bachman argues that everyone worships the same God. For example, Judaism and Satanism are not the same but are both expressions of worship of the same deity. If there is no supernatural world (i.e. no God), and all the religions of the world find their source in the minds of men, who deem them all useless. In the words of Governor Jesse Ventura: “It makes no difference what religion one chooses, they are all crutches created by weak-minded people who need help to cope in this cruel world. Studies show that two groups can talk about the same God in a way that admits nothing else and still agree that they are talking about the same being. Some examples are the Islamic religion which believes that Jesus is simply a prophet and is not divine, and Christianity which believes that Jesus is God incarnate. Because of the diversity and impact of religion on the lives of Americans, individual belief must be treated as equals, not... middle of paper ... the requirements of the law are written into their hearts, their conscience also testifies to it, and their thoughts sometimes accuse them, sometimes even defend them. » (Romans 2:14-16) More recent studies show that another proof of absolute truth is science. Science is the pursuit of knowledge. All scientific studies believe that there are objective realities in the world and that these realities are discovered and proven. Without the absolute, what would researchers study? The laws of Science are based on absolute truth. Finally, religion demonstrates absolute truth. All world religions give meaning and definition to life. Religion was born out of humanity's desire to want more than existence. Through religion, humans hope to draw closer to God by asking forgiveness and asking difficult questions. God who is the “Creator” becomes the standard of absolute truth.
