People must trust a hero. In a conversation with Jem, Miss Maudie says, "Did you ever think that Judge Taylor appointing Atticus to defend that dog was no accident?" Could Judge Taylor have had his reasons for appointing him? ยป (p. 289) Miss Maudie questions why Judge Taylor assigned the case of Atticus Tom Robinson. The reader realizes that the reason behind this is Atticus' integrity. Judge Taylor knew that Atticus would take on the difficult task of complying with the Constitution and granting Tom Robinson a "...fair trial...". With the community against him, Judge Taylor knew Atticus would stay strong. A hero is trustworthy. Judge Taylor knew that Atticus was very trustworthy, which is why he got the case. Judge Taylor trusted Atticus that he would uphold the Constitution and give Tom Robinson a fair trial. This shows that Judge Taylor trusts Atticus when a man's life is in danger. This shows that Atticus has enormous integrity. Integrity is necessary in the formula for making a hero. Without it, people wouldn't believe or trust you. This will ruin your morale and make it harder to achieve goals. Atticus also demonstrates integrity when he visits Tom Robinson's family after Tom Robinson's death. "They left the highway, walked slowly past the dump, and passed the Ewell residence, down the narrow lane leading to the negro cabins. Dill said a crowd of black children were playing marbles in Tom's yard. Atticus parked the car and got out followed Calpurnia.
