Over time, many texts have been translated into different languages. There are many cases where many people do not know that what they have often read has been translated from one language into theirs. As these texts are translated, translators usually omit certain expressions or phrases because they would not be culturally appropriate for a certain culture or would not make sense in a literal context. Since many translators do not translate texts word for word, there has been controversy over which translation technique to use. These techniques are: domestication and foreignization which are elaborated in the text “The Domesticated Foreigner” by Paloposki and Oittinen. In the film "Exporting Raymond" directed by Phil Rosenthal, he demonstrates that domesticating or completely foreignizing certain scenes from the series "Everybody Loves Raymond" into Russian would not be an effective form of translation but that combining the two methods would be quite effective . At the beginning of the film "Exporting Raymond", the Russians only wanted to translate the series "Everybody Loves Raymond" into domesticated Russian. “Domestication… assimilates a text to target cultural and linguistic values” during translation (374). For example, a discussion arose when costume designer Elena Starodubtseva wanted to change the original show's costumes to trendier styles due to Russia being more "hip" than America (Exporting Raymond). Another example that Russia used domestication to translate the series is by replacing all of the original actors' names with Russian names. Just as the text "The Domestic Stranger" states that "the most obvious change, the one...... middle of paper... is good, but one point Rosenthal raises is that it does not don't do it. wanting to adapt the parade to fashion, which then changes the direction of the parade (Raymond Export). This better illustrates how Rosenthal had a mentality of only using the foreign so that the message embedded in the scenes could be transferred effectively to Russian culture without much change or adaptation. In conclusion, we can agree that the use of both foreign and domestication should be used when translating a text and/or film. We can see that successfully using the mixture of the two techniques can lead to accurate translation..
